Context: The delicate facial features, pensive lips, and almond-shaped eyes of this dreamy adolescent are characteristic of similar figures that appear repeatedly in Picasso's paintings of harlequin and circus figures of 1905. This work was owned by the American writer and patron of the artist, Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), and a photograph of her apartment in Paris taken around 1907 shows the work hanging there.
