Subject Description: Depicts a rustic figure watching two gentlemen playing weiqi under a cliff. most likely depicts the tale of the Han dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 222) woodcutter Wang Zhi. One day Wang went into the mountains to find firewood. On his way he encountered twomen playing weiqi, and he asked if he could watch their game. After some time one of the men looked up and remarked that the handle of Wang's axe had rotted away. Astonished, Wang realized that he was in the presence of Daoist immortals, and rushed back to his village, only to find that several hundred years had elapsed in the course of watching the game. Eventually Wang Zhi himself became an immortal. (S. Little, 1999)
