Harkness Endowment Fund 1923.1052This design was executed with four wood blocks, each printed in a differentcolor and carrying a portion of the design. The composition was completeonly when all of the blocks had been printed. Diogenes (died about 320 bc)was a Greek philosopher renowned for his avoidance of physical pleasure.The rooster in the background is an obscure reference to Diogene'scondemnation of Plato's definition of man as a featherless biped.
