Note
First printing of the 5th. volume of the Jesuit missionaries' reports in 287 page, with the first edition of the Kino's map of California published for the first time in this book. Bound in full calf with rich gold decoration and gold title on spine. Kino proved that California was not an island by leading an overland expedition there from Arizona. Map is a cartographic milestone in the mapping of California. Streeter Sale 2424 noted that: "The letters contain the first translation of Father Francisco Piccolo's "Informe del estado de la nueva cristiandad de California". Kino's map exerted a great influence on contemporary cartography, especially after the French mapmaker, Guillaume Delisle, adapted the Kino's thesis. Eusebio Francisco Kino S.J. was a Roman Catholic priest who became famous for his exploration in Northern Mexico and to present day California and Arizona. He established twenty-four missions and visitas and was known for his ability to create relationships between indigenous peoples and the religious institutions he represented. Kino also practiced other crafts and was an expert astronomer, mathematician and cartographer, who drew the first accurate maps of Pimería Alta, the Gulf of California and Baja California. Map is folding copper engraved, on sheet 24.5x21.5., with 40 +1 pages of explanatory text, extends south on the peninsula to Loreto and Cinaloa and north to Colorado River, showing Kino's discoveries, place names, settlements, rivers and mountains. Relief shown pictorially.

To His Excellency Roger Griswold, Esq. And to The Honourable, The Legislature of The State of Connecticut, This Map is Respectfully Inscribed By the Publishers. Hartford, February 1812.
List No

Note
First detailed 19th century survey. Has Humphrysville "Woolen Manufactory..." notation, thus 1st edition, 2nd state (Thompson). Foundation map of state, first to show turnpikes. Extensive listing of manufactories, mills, churches, etc. Later published in smaller size, editions from 1820 to 1847. Engraved by Abner Reed, East Winsor. Thompson lists this same map as 1812, but it is entered in 1813, and the current Governor is listed as 1813-, leading one to believe an 1813 date would be more accurate. Outline color. With black top and bottom rollers.

Translation of text: "The crossing of all the allied armies over the Rhine caused in all military personnel the desire and the urgent demand for our large topographical military map of Germany, which had guided them in their operations up to the Rhine, to also be extended beyond its borders to the west. As much as we would like to fulfill this wish to support the great good cause, it has been temporarily postponed...it was not so easy, for a new large grid first had to be designed for this Supplement, and all the boundary sections of the Rhine had to be completed. However, we have given in to this urgent demand, made every effort to satisfy it as quickly as possible, and hereby announce a Supplement of the large topographical-military Map of Germany, in 204 sheets, or the provisional extension of it beyond the western side of the Rhine. The overview table attached here shows that our supplementary map contains 45 sections and goes in the north from Vlissingen, Bergen-op-Zoom, and Breda; in the west through Dünkirchen, St. Omer, Lille, Cambray, Mézières, Verdun, Comercy, Toul, La Marche, Belfort; and in the south through Bienne to Solothurn. The sections of this new map all have the same size and scale as the old ones, and fit exactly into the large topographical military map, so that the missing part located on the left bank of the Rhine is added and connects seamlessly with the previously issued sections. This new supplementary map is indeed a continuation and necessary extension of the large topographical-military map of Germany, as it is numbered according to its own grid and table, just like the boundary sections of the supplement from No. 1 to No. 45, whereby the boundary sections on the Rhine are double-numbered, so that one number refers to the section in the supplement's table and the other to the corresponding section in the table of the large map, thus avoiding any confusion. Since Cassini's Atlas of France, Ferraris' Map of Belgium, and the Atlas National de France provide us with the most excellent materials for this supplement, there can be no doubt about the highest accuracy and utility of our supplement. The price for the sections is 6 groschen for ordinary paper and 8 groschen for Vélin paper, and all other conditions are the same as for the large map of Germany. We will send the supplement as a necessary continuation and addition to the subscribers of the large map. However, many military and business people who may not own the large topographical military map of Germany but need the supplement for their operations, and who wish to own it without having to purchase the entire large map, can obtain the supplement separately. Every section of the supplement can be purchased individually. In 6–8 weeks, we hope to deliver all boundary sections and subsequently make deliveries every 14 days. All good bookstores and art dealers accept orders for this. Collectors who order directly from us and pay for at least five complete copies will receive the fifth copy free, or a 20 percent discount in cash value.
