A New Map Of The Province Of Lower Canada, Describing all the Seigneuries, Townships, Grants of Land, &c. Compiled from Plans deposited in the Patent Office Quebec; By Samuel Holland, Esq. Surveyor General ... London. James Wyld Geographer to Her Majesty. 5 Charing Cross, Jany. 1, 1838 (Second Edition).
List No
10753.001
Note
The first edition was 1802, with later editions in 1813, 1829, 1838, 1840 and 1843. Shows Canada from just west of Montreal east to St. John in New Brunswick. The 1802 edition was based on surveys made by Samuel Holland before his death in 1801. This was a companion map (although on a larger scale) to the David Smyth/Faden/Wyld map of Upper Canada, first issued in 1800 (see our copies). With outline color. See our 5065.000 for the 1838 edition. "Important map of the Lower Province of Canada, including information concerning over 100 land grants on either side of the St. Lawrence River, including the names of Land Owners. The map has been updated to show the surveys conducted in 1796-98 along the Scoudiac and Magaguadavic Rivers, in order to ascertain the true location of the St. Croix River. This second article of the Treaty of Peace between the US and Britain included a line...From the northwest angle of Nova Scotia, viz., that angle which is formed by a line drawn due north from the source of St. Croix River to the highlands… It later became apparent that there was more than one St. Croix River, a further treaty provision in 1794 appointed a boundary comission, which detemined in 1798 that the intended St. Croix was the Schoodiac River and its northern branch Cheputnaticook. The Treaty of Ghent, concluded on December 24, 1814, agreed to provide for a final adjustment of the boundaries described in the Treaty of 1783 that had not yet been determined, which included the boundary line from the source of the River St. Croix to the most northwestern point of the Lake of the Woods. A further commission was appointe to settle the boundary from the St. Croix to the St. Lawrence. Joseph Bouchette and John Lawrence were hired to conduct the surveys and the reports submitted for resolution to a third nation and ulimately resolved by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. A scarce and important map." (Ruderman, 2021)

The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt.

Issued to accompany the author's "British Dominions..." of 1832. In the preface, referring to this map and the map of Quebec, Bouchette states "In the general frame work of the maps of Lower Canada, which are upon a large and explanatory scale, the author was materially aided by his previous topographical exhibit of that province, published in 1815...but the details are entirely new and compiled, with the greatest care, from numerous original surveys and documents of indubitable authenticity, that have enabled him to lay down every minutia of topography." And on the last page of volume one, the maps are stated to be "hitherto unequaled for local precision." Essentially, this map of Montreal District and the sister map of Quebec are of the same large scale of the 1815 Map of Lower Canada, but actually enlarge the area of coverage (the mother map was already over ten feet long) to a combined length of over fifteen feet, all with massive updating to show the growth of settlement and survey. The Montreal map also emphasizes the Rideau Canal with a large inset map and by adding that portion of Upper Canada through with the canal passes (the text refers to the canal as Canada's equivalent of the Erie Canal). Another remarkable production by Bouchette. Map has outline color and is dissected into 33 sections. Folds with marbled end sheets into a half leather marbled paper covered slip case 35x23.5 with "Montreal" stamped in gilt on the spine.

First edition, to accompany the author's "British Dominions in North America." A later enlarged edition was published in New York by Sherman & Smith in 1846 (see our #5071), reprinted with additions in 1852, 1853 (no significant changes)(see NMM 479 for an atlas edition of the map, 1853). Joseph Bouchette Junior carried on his father's work and this map is a worthy successor to the elder Bouchette's 1815 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The scale is almost three times as large and the size of the map is doubled. A list of authorities is given, all Canadian, ending with "several important American Authorities" (which are unnamed). Lands belonging to the Canada Company are shown. There is a great deal of detail in the U.S. portions of the map, and attention is paid to the Maine boundary dispute with a note - but only the British claim line is shown. Outline color by state. Map has green cloth edging and is dissected into 35 sections. Folds with blue paper end sheets into a new gray cloth folding case 28x21.5 with "Upper And Lower Canada J. Bouchette, Jr. 1831" stamped in gilt on the spine.

This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure.
