Pub Note:
Signed by Dr Lawrence G. Roberts. "He was the winner of the Draper Priz in 2001 for "for the development of the Internet". In many ways the accomplishments of the Arpanet, were directly attributal to Roberts. From his realization of the structure and software to enforcing a reticent academic culture to utilize the network itself. While the Arpanet's structure had been toyed with in the mid 60's, by the late 1969 it was created and functional. So why a map remembering 1971? It may lay in the small points labelled "T", these were the "Tips" ("Terminal Interface Processors") that allowed people to access the network through a portal. Not just logging in through a main computer at an institution, but an entry point ... "permitted users to get on the network directly, with their terminals so they could have direct access to all the machines ... this was not what we originally comtemplated, when we built the network, turned out to be far more important than going through the computers to get at other places, and quickly proved that the right approach is for your work station ... for it to be independently connected to the communication media ... not through some other shared environment"- Lawrence Roberts (January 9, 1986)" Curtis Bird, 2020
