MAPPING AMERICA June 2003 - January 2004
(Please click image to view high resolution version) A collection of rare and unique maps from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection are on display through January 2004 at the San Francisco International Airport. Pictured above is a first edition map from 1814 of Lewis and Clark's track across the Western portion of North America. Below it is a map from 1810 of the upper Mississippi River Valley by Zebulon Montgomery Pike.
(Please click image to view high resolution version) Among the treasures from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection (www.davidrumsey.org) to be seen in the San Francisco International Airport exhibition "Mapping America" is an eight by eight foot wall map by Henry Popple dating back to 1733. Once owned by King George II, as indicated by the seal in the upper right detail, this large-scale map was regarded as the most accurate of its day.
(Please click any of the above images to view high resolution version) The installation includes 74 maps, atlases, guidebooks and charts from David Rumsey's private map collection, which numbers more than 150,000 pieces. The Mapping America exhibition is on view through January 15, 2004 and is open 24 hours a day, free of charge. It is located pre-security in Gallery D-5 Central South Connector, located between Terminals 1 and 2 near the Delta and American Airline gates.
