Note: Unlike the earlier 1857 ed., this shows "Proposed Arizonia Territory" in Gadsden Purchase, adds Coos, Douglas and Jackson counties in Oregon, as well as Carson and Humboldt, etc. in Nevada,and several additional counties in Arizona and New Mexico, and adds an "explanation." Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Shows Indian tribes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

Publication Note: Has Late Calif. map showing proposed "Arazonia." Also has a new map of Nebraska, Kansas, etc. which is taken from the east half of the original Mitchell map of Texas, Oregon and California. Which observation has made us realize that all the California and western maps in the Mitchell Universal Atlas series started from the Texas, Oregon, California map of 1846 (the first California map appeared in the 1847 Atlas). The last issue of this atlas by Desilver was 1858, with an 1859 issue by Cushing and Bailey. Full color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on the front leather label.
