Context:
Music is an important part of New Ireland ceremonial life. One of the principal instruments is a set of bamboo pipes, similar in design to the panpipes of ancient Greece. This large figure of a piper wears a pandanus-leaf hat, typically worn by New Ireland women. Knowledgeable New Irelanders disagree about whether women were traditionally permitted to play panpipes. This figure may portray an ancestor or the deceased for which a particular malagan was held.
