Context:

The Seated Female Nude is a preparatory drawing for Prud'hon's 1793 masterpiece, The Union of Love and Friendship. The figure is an allegory of Friendship. In this preliminary study, the artist considered placing a veil over the head of the figure. In the painting, Prud'hon substituted the wreath of myrtle and pomegranate-the symbol of concord and internal harmony, which is the traditional iconographical attribute of Friendship.
