Context:
|
This scene shows the Mississippi River at Pine Bend, Minnesota (hidden off to the left), about 12 miles south of Saint Paul. Henry P. Bosse aimed his camera north to capture the graceful curve of the river, numerous wing dams, and a distant horizon. The slender wing dams, perpendicular to the river's banks, were built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain a minimum river depth for steamboat passage. Working for the Corps, Bosse photographed the Mississippi between Minneapolis and Saint Louis, producing oval-shaped images as cyanotypes, the same process architects use today for blueprints. |
