Context:
The body of this belthook is formed by a pair of entwined dragons, their bodies richly gilded and arranged along the narrow sides to frame six jade plaques, five of which are carved in low relief with matching scroll motifs and stylized t'ao-t'ieh masks. This well-known hook was reportedly discovered at Chin t'sun near Lo-yang in Honan province during the 1930's. A nearly identical garment hook was excavated in 1996 from a Warring States (481-221 b.c.) tomb in Lo-yang. Garment hooks inlaid with gold, silver, glass, and jade were amongst the most luxurious items of personal dress during the Warring States period and they mark the shift away from the use of bronze for religious vessels toward decorative secular objects.
