Context:
Embellishment was an important aspect of fine armor. Etching was the most commonly used decorative technique. Here, etched bands are laid out along the borders. On the breastplate, pauldrons, and tassets, etched medallions enclose profile busts reminiscent of Roman portraiture.This half-armor was once part of a complete field armor for man and horse (much like the one on the floor of the Armor Court) as is evidenced by the lance rest on the breastplate.
