Context:
Lavinia Fontana was the first woman to have a successful career as a painter, supporting her family and achieving public recognition. The painter of this portrait, long unknown, can now be identified as Fontana through similarities with signed portraits. It is rare to find husband and wife portrayed in a single painting during the Italian Renaissance. The woman holds the skin of a marten (similar to a sable), which attracted fleas away from the body and clothing.
