Context:
Dora Wheeler (1857-1940), one of Chase's first pupils, was a prominent portraitist and textile designer. Chase depicted Wheeler in her New York studio, seated in front of a dramatic gold embroidered tapestry. This flamboyant painting was shown at international exhibitions in Munich and Paris in 1883 before being given to the sitter, who in turn gave it to the museum.
