Context:
Homer began this painting in 1883 with a watercolor study of the coast near his studio at Prout's Neck, Maine. Begun in 1900, the picture took almost two years to finish, as the artist waited for the proper conditions of sunlight and weather. Finally, on October 19, 1902, "the long looked-for day arrived and from 6 to 8 o'clock a.m. I painted from nature. This is the best picture of the sea that I have painted."This absolute identity with the forces of nature is an extension of Romantic painting's ideals. In Homer's picture, no human presence interferes with the crashing waves and shifting clouds. There is considerable drama here, especially in the uneasy light after a violent storm at sea.
