Context:
Unusual for Lautrec-whose editions were printed without variation-each impression of Miss Loïe Fuller is unique. The artist experimented, printing each of the approximately 60 impressions differently. Five lithographic stones were used but were inked in an assortment of colors. Finally, some impressions, like this one, were dusted with gold or silver powder.
Born Mary Louise Fuller in Chicago, Loïe Fuller was working in the theater in New York by 1878. By 1891 she was pursuing a career as a dancer, performing works of her own invention. Flowing, billowy costumes and brilliant lighting created new and sensational theatrical effects, and by 1892 she was performing with the Folies-Bergère in Paris.
