Context:
This is the first of at least seven versions of this subject painted by El Greco. Here the Christ child is playful and squirms in his mother's lap as she hands him a piece of fruit from the bowl held by Saint Joseph, at the left. At the right is Mary Magdalen who embraces the Virgin and places her own face close to that of the Madonna. The pensive, tormented face of the repentant Magdalen serves to emphasize the radiant serenity of the Virgin--the mother of Christ.Georges de La Tour (French, 1593-1652)
