Context:
Once an Impressionist painter, Cézanne was among the first artists to break with the movement and replace its concern with atmospheric effects with a new emphasis on geometric structure. Between 1888 and 1892 he painted two views of the pigeon tower at his brother-in-law's house in Bellevue, a small town in southern France. This composition is the larger and more resolved of the two paintings. To make the tower the focal point of the composiiton, Cézanne exaggerated its cylindrical shape, extending itupward and to the left. By eliminating unnecessary details and establishing the solidity of the cedar and olive trees, which echo the contours of the tower, Cézanne followed the advice he once gave a colleague: "Treat nature by means of the cylinder, thesphere, and the cone."
