Context:
The Biblical parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-21) tells of a man who feasted and celebrated every day, while a beggar named Lazarus sat starving nearby. Dogs came to lick the sores on the poor man's body. However, when the two men died, Lazarus was welcomed into heaven, while the rich was consigned to hell.Jacopo Bassano came from a family of artists (his father and his four sons were painters). He specialized in a highly original approach, in which smoky colored shapes emerge from the darkness of the background. He also helped to popularize the taste for paintings in which genre (daily life) dominates the ostensible religious subject.
