Context:
|
Judging from the scenes represented here - the Massacre of the Innocents, the Flight into Egypt, and Christ among the Doctors - this tapestry originally belonged to a set illustrating the Life of Christ or the Life of the Virgin. The division of scenes by jeweled columns, the continuous border of flowers in the foreground, and the crowding of figures within each scene are common features of Franco-Flemish tapestries produced around 1500.
