Context:
Images of "courtly pleasures" became a major decorative theme during the Saljuq period (1038-1220). These pleasures included feasting, drinking wine, hunting, and playing polo. The game of polo was played in Iran as early as 330 BC. After the Muslim conquest of Iran, polo spread to other parts of the Islamic world, where it soon became a favorite diversion for rulers and their courts.
