Context:
This miniature and its text derive from a manuscript of Jean de Courcy's 'Chronique de la Bouquechardiere' which relates events from the Creation of the world to the birth of Christ. Luxurious copies of literary texts, particularly chronicles, were increasingly produced in France and the Low Countries between about 1450 and 1475 -- a period of relative peace and stability. A real intellectual curiosity about the past and its moral significance spread not only among the nobility but also among the ranks of wealthy merchant classes who provided a ready clientele for literary manuscripts.
