Context:

The calm, cloud-flecked blue sky and gentle sweep of the valley around Lake Pepin, Minnesota, were far removed from the turmoil of the Civil War in 1862. In that year, Duncanson traveled up the Mississippi River in search of artistic inspiration as well as escape from the war's upheaval. He settled temporarily in Canada, finding its inhabitants more tolerant.

One of the first African-American artists to earn critical acclaim, Duncanson worked for prominent abolitionists with great success in Montreal and London.
