Context:
Although Rousseau never ventured outside France, he gave this painting a tropical mood derived from reading travel books and from frequent visits to the Paris botanical garden, the Jardin des Plantes. He surrounded the image of a tiger attacking a buffalo with a fantastic jungle scene of sharply outlined hothouse plants enlarged to frightening proportions. Botanical accuracy was of little importance-note the bananas growing upside down. Rousseau was working on this painting when he was arrested and imprisoned for fraud in December 1907. Officials granted him an early release to finish it for exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants, where this major composition, one of the artist's largest and most important, appeared in March 1908.
