Context:
Large full-length portraits with props such as columns, dramatic draperies, and rich decorations were normally reserved for those who could afford them: royalty and the aristocracy. This portrait of an unidentified Genoese noblewoman emphasizes her wealth and her status as a mother, both of which confirm her social position. Van Dyck enlivened the composition by showing the child spontaneously reaching up to her.After studying with Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp, Van Dyck lived and worked in Italy from 1621 to 1628. There he established an elegant portrait type--grand images of the nobility with proud postures and slim figures--that soon became common all over Europe. He returned to Antwerp for a brief period but then, at the invitation of King Charles I, he went to England, where he remained for the rest of his life.
