Context:
Inscriptions on this ewer dated 620 in the Muslim calendar (1223 AD) are the earliest recorded signatures of the master craftsman Ahmad al-Thaki of Mosul. Although much of the silver inlay has been lost, one can still discern the overall composition of bands with large and small medallions. The large medallions contain scenes of everyday life, while the smaller medallions enclose musicians, dancers or hunters.
