Context:
A medieval troubador sings as he strums his mandolin. Elegant subjects of this sort were usually rendered in bright colors and fine brushstrokes, but Daumier chose instead a somber palette and rough paint textures. This style was typical of the Realistmovement, active in France between 1840 and 1860, which often focused on gritty, lower-class themes.
