Context:
Textile with Hunters in RoundelsWeft-faced compound twill; silk (two fragments mounted together)Central Asia, Sogdiana, 700s-800sThe Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of The Textile Arts Club 1959.124 andPurchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1982.284(Cat. no. 2)These textiles are woven with floral roundels that enclose horsemen huntinglions. The theme of horsemen hunting with lances, the floral frames of theroundels, and the costumes of the hunters were all inspired by silks fromthe Byzantine world. The stiff, abstracted style, however, ischaracteristic of Sogdian silks.Silks woven in Sogdiana were often traded to distant markets. Thesefragments were preserved in an Egyptian grave where they were found sewn asornaments onto a tunic.
