Context:
Craggy cheekbones, sunken cheeks, and a protruding lower jaw characterize the face of Amenemhat III, one of the greatest kings of ancient Egypt. His features--so different from the ideal portraits of Old Kingdom rulers--set the style for the late MiddleKingdom. The king's prayerful attitude--arms in front, hands pressed against his body--indicates that the statue was placed in a temple. His kilt, a portion of which is looped over his belt, has a flaring starched triangular panel.
