Context:
One of the most enlightened rulers of the ancient Near East, Gudea was a patron of the arts, including literature and the visual arts. His sculptors were among the most highly skilled of any in history. This statue, showing Gudea with hands folded in prayer, probably originally stood in a shrine. Since ancient sculptures were thought to possess life, this statue took Gudea's place in worshipping the gods.
