Context:
Although he died at the age of 28, Schiele created a vast body of work, including hundreds of drawings primarily devoted to the expressive capacity of the human form. The baby shown on this sheet is the son of Shiele's friend and fellow artist Anton Peschka (1885-1940). Schiele made numerous drawings of Peschka's son, the earliest in 1915, which is when he probably began this one. He seems to have first dated the drawing to 1915, but changed the '5' to a '6' after he completed the work in 1916.
