Context:
|
Otto Bacher was the first Cleveland-born artist to receive international acclaim. In 1876 he joined fellow painters De Scott Evans and Archibald Willard in founding the Cleveland Art Club. After studying in Munich, Bacher returned to Cleveland in 1883 and established a summer school at nearby Richfield. Bacher left Ohio permanently in 1885 and settled in the vicinity of New York City, often painting Impressionist pictures on Long Island. This portrait of his wife, Mary Bacher, exemplifies the ideal womanof the 1890s. Intentionally and self-consciously American, such images were meant to convey a national spirit.
