This picture is one of a series depicting the four Fathers of the Latin Church: Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory. The paintings were probably meant to be hung high on the wall of a church, as suggested by the large scale and tilted position of the figure, and the bold but simple contrasts of light and dark.Saint Ambrose (339-391), the Bishop of Milan, was known for the firmness with which he defended the Church's rights. His relations with the Emperor Theodosius, whom he called the son of the Church, set the ideal pattern for Church-State relations for later generations.
