Context:
Hampstead Heath is a hilly expanse of land on the northern edge of London. Attracted by its dramatic views and rapidly changing weather conditions, Constable frequently sketched and painted there and, around 1827, made the Heath his permanent home. This particular view, looking past a steep hill to Branch Hill Pond, was one of his favorite compositions.Integral to Constable's understanding of familiar places are the workers of the land: farmers tending their animals, but more important, laborers dredging sand and gravel to be used in construction. In Constable's view, the emotional power of landscape painting depends as much on such figures as on the shifting light through the clouds.This work is a variant of a painting shown at the Royal Academy in 1828; both derive from an oil sketch of 1819.
