Context:
This painting was commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, one of the major collectors in Rome in the 1600s. The Barberini family emblem--the bee--appears as a clasp on Samson's left shoulder.Samson is portrayed as a melancholic, brooding figure. At his side is the jawbone of an ass, used to kill 1,000 men, as in the biblical account.
