Context:
Yaka sculptures known as biteki support sacred substances containing life force. These materials, together with the figure, assist the prayers and supplications of owners for protection from harm, sickness, or loss. Distinctive features of Yaka sculpture include bisected eyes, upturned nose, and framed facial area -- also seen in the Yaka mask (1969.8) seen in the mask section.
