This may be a portrait mask of a respected female elder. Note her elaborate multi-lobed coiffure, refined facial features, delicate facial marks, and square mouth with chipped teeth -- a sign of beauty. Baule masks like this were a major source of inspiration for the modernist painter Amadeo Modigliani. See his Portrait of a Girl (1917-18) in Gallery 36.See video
