Context:
The Baule adopted the Goli masking tradition from their neighbors, the Wan, about 1900. A Goli spectacle -- called by the Baule "a dance of rejoicing" -- is performed for the visits of important persons, good harvests, and funerals. Danced in pairs, the first masks to appear are the kple kple worn by young performers who execute rapid, stamping steps before striking with a stick the antelope hides on their backs. The two sets of horns are antelope references.See video
