Context:
|
In designing his portrait busts, Carpeaux abandoned the strict frontality and symmetry of the neo-classic style and was instead inspired by French portrait busts of the late 17th and 18th centuries. From them Carpeaux borrowed a sense of animation and movement (suggested by a turn of the head and the arrangement of drapery), combined with realism in the depiction of surfaces and details of costume.
