Context:
This painting belongs to a series of five portraits, now divided among various museums, depicting the daughters of Elbert Dircksz and Petronella Spiegel, wealthy citizens of Amsterdam. Each of these pictures of Elisabeth and her sisters show them with an object representing one of the five senses. Elisabeth, shown holding a flute, evokesthe sense of hearing.Although only 11 years old, Elisabeth is dressed like an adult in a fitted, low-necked gown of costly satin. Her rich clothing suggests her parent's prosperity, as do the pearls of her necklace, hair ornament, and brooch. The ostrich feathers in her hair likewise point to her family's wealth. Imported from Africa, these plumes also reflect the importance of Amsterdam as an international trade center.
