Context:
|
This charming double portrait depicts the wife and daughter of Besnard's good friend and fellow artist, Henri Lerolle (1848-1929). As the family of a painter at the center of artistic life in Paris, Madelleine and Yvonne Lerolle were no doubt at home ina studio setting. The portfolio at the right, the easel, and the canvas frame the figures, reinforcing the sense of familiarity. Besnard also captured the intimacy of mother and child, distinguishig between the timid uncertainty of youth and the calm that comes from age and experience. The son of the two artists, Besnard enjoyed success throughout his life by painting portraits and winning many commissions for public mural projects.
