Context:
The central panel shows the Virgin seated on a throne with the infant Christ, surrounded by kneeling angels and fluttering cherubim. Below, on a pedestal called a predella, a small image of the dead Christ appears between the Virgin and St. John. Above the arch, on the proscenium, the artist has painted Christ after his ascent into Heaven, and two more angels, one of whom gazes down on the main scene.Twisted columns (known as Solomonic columns because it was thought that this type decorated Solomon's temple) frame the central image, while the upper arches are decorated with leaves. Covered in gold, these framing elements give greater aura to the figures and help organize the different scenes in the altarpiece.
