Inscriptions:
Album leaf, ink and color on silk, 28.6 x 30 cm.Artist's title, signature, and seal: River Village - Fisherman's Joy. Tzu-ang. [seal] Chao shih Tzu-ang.1 colophon and 2 additional seals: 1 colophon, unsigned; 2 seals of Wang Chi-ch'ien (20th c.).Colophon, unsigned:The technique used for the mountains in this album leaf is that of "outline without texture strokes" [k'ung-kou wu-ts'un], after the painting Fishing in Snow by Yu-ch'en [Wang Wei, 699-759]. The wintry groves and pine needles follow those of Li Ying-ch'iu [Li Ch'eng, act. ca. 960-990]. The figures and houses are also wonderful; the coloring, solid and archaic. These methods, which are identical to his Autumn Colors on the Ch'iao and Hua Mountains, were not used after the Sung Dynasty [960-1279]. The inscription and signature must be written with the same brush used for the painting. That is why they appear slender and thin. However, they are strong and effortless, typical of his personal manner. This painting should be considered equal to the Snowscape by Wang Wei in the same album. The latter surpasses by its careful detail, the former excels in its serene richness; both are masterpieces that are unprecedented in the past and to be unmatched in the future. trans. LYSL/WKH
