Context:
Like his contemporaries Jules Breton (1827-1906) and Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), Lhermitte specialized in depictions of peasant and rural life. Besides oil paintings, he devoted much attentionto highly finished charcoal drawings. He exhibited them at the annual Salon exhibitions in Paris and regarded them as independent works of art, rather than mere preparatory studies for paintings. In the 1880s he also began working in pastel, a medium he would help revolutionize.
