Context:
During his short career Juan van der Hamen, whose father was from the Netherlands, became a prominent painter in Madrid. The pure, almost abstract arrangement of form in this work is closely linked with still-life painting in the Netherlands. The rectangular cakes on the plates are made of almonds and hazelnuts; the white squares are concoctions of pine nuts and sugar.
