Context:
While Saints Peter and Paul were in Rome winning converts to Christianity, Simon Magus, claiming to be the son of God, attempted to prove his divinity by flying. Because of Saint Peter's prayers, the demons supporting Simon abandoned him and he crashed to his death. This is a study for an altarpiece that was commissioned in 1746 to hang in the Vatican. Installed in 1755, it was removed two years later, as taste changed toward a simpler, less exuberant style.
