Context:
Male figures embellished the grave shrines inside the palaces of the grassland kingdoms of Cameroon. Accessories such as coiffure, drinking horn, staff or pipe indicate high status and activities. The thrust of the jaw, the flexed arms and legs, the muscularity of the thighs and calves, and the vigorous qualities of volumes and surface textures distinguish the expressive, dynamic style of Bangwa sculptors.
