Context:
Henry Raeburn was largely self-taught. He began his career by painting portrait miniatures, after which he progressed to full-scale portraits. He moved to London from his native Edinburgh in 1784, but returned to Scotland in 1787 after a trip to Italy. His portraits of leading literary and legal figures and Highland chiefs were painted without preliminary drawings in an original, bold, and direct style.
