Context:
|
This is one of four surviving miniatures from the only known illuminated copy of Cretin's poem, 'Debat entre deux dames sur le passetemps des chiens et oyseaux.' The poem, which takes the form of a debate between two women who discuss at length the relative merits of hunting with falcons versus hunting with dogs, is presumed to have been written as a presentation copy for King Francis I (1515-1547). This as yet unidentified artist is known to have painted the illustrations to several books intended for the king as well as for other members of the court circle during the 1530s.
